Gum grafting, also known as soft tissue grafting, may be necessary when gum tissue has receded or the gum line is uneven.
Gum recession may be caused by several factors, including:
- Overagressive brushing
- Poor oral hygiene
- Periodontal disease
- Use of tobacco products
When gum recession occurs, it exposes the tooth roots and increases your risk of tooth loss. Common symptoms include sensitive teeth, exposed tooth roots, inflammation, bad breath, easy bleeding of the gums, and teeth that look longer than normal.
During your consultation, our periodontist will determine the extent of your gum recession. If your gums have receded beyond the point where the damage can be halted, a gum grafting treatment may be recommended. There are several types of gum grafting, and we will work with you to create a customized treatment plan that meets your needs.
When you receive gum grafting, our periodontist will stitch grafting tissue onto the areas where your gum tissue has receded. This grafted tissue is usually taken from the roof of your mouth or the surrounding gums. Once healed, the gum graft will improve both the health and the appearance of your smile.
